The purpose of cardiac rehabilitation in heart failure are
1) prevention of excessive resting adverse effects (physical and mental deconditioning, pressure ulcers, pulmonary embolism, etc.) by facilitating getting out of bed
2) improvement of exercise tolerance and QOL
3) prevention of recurrence of heart failure and readmission through patient education and disease management. Patients with heart failure are prone to physical and mental deconditioning due to long-term bed rest, disuse syndrome, and skeletal muscle atrophy (cardiac cachexia) due to undernutrition and elevated inflammatory cytokines. It is important to introduce cardiac rehabilitation consisting of exercise therapy and education / counseling from the early stage of heart failure.
